How To:
Choose the Right Wall Art for Your Space
Looking for wall art but don't know how or where to start when choosing a piece? We've all been there! You look at your wall and see an amazing blank canvas ready to tell a story worth sharing but there are so many types of artworks, from travel photography prints to abstract sculptures - it can get overwhelming trying to figure out which is the right wall art for your space. Whether you're decorating your first apartment or refreshing a beloved space, here are the top 5 tips to choosing the right wall art for your space.
1. Define your space's purpose
Wall art is more than just for decoration - it can help define the purpose & mood of a space. Vibrant colourful photography prints can energize a room, while a serene landscape sets a calming tone.
In this example here, you have 2 similar living spaces in terms of overall colour palette & wall colour. However, the energy in one living room is boosted by the colourful photographic print of Lake Como villas, while the ambience is much more subdued and calm in the other living space with the photographic print of Luxembourg's Adolphe Bridge.
My tip: You can see here how using travel wall art enhances both the ambience & aesthetic of the room!

2. Layer your art with lighting
Ever notice how, even in a well-lit art gallery, there's additional lighting strategically placed on artwork? This is enhances visibility, ensures proper colour rendering and highlights focal points in the wall art. It’s not just what you hang, but how you illuminate it!
For instance, natural light gives the most accurate colour representation of photography art so ideally think about placing your piece in a room with sufficient natural light. However, artificial lighting can also do wonders in enhancing the vibrancy. Warm colours in artwork (eg. reds, yellows, oranges) can be enhanced by using warm lighting while cool lighting enhances cooler tones (eg. blues, greens, purples).
How to avoid glare effects from lighting?
To reduce the effect of glare from lighting, aim to hang your wall art at an angle of 30 degrees between the light beam & a photography print so that light can spread across the entire piece evenly.
It's also important to place wall art at eye level as this is where natural light is targeted.
3. Create a visual flow between art & furniture
Art should complement & interact with other elements in the room for a balanced look so it's important to position wall art visually in a way that connects with the furniture.
There are 3 distances to remember when it comes to hanging wall art in any living space, whether it be hallway, living room, bedroom or dining area. I've used our large photographic print of Luxembourg's Adolphe Bridge to highlight the scale of the piece and demonstrate how it should be placed relative to furniture, while the Reflection of Blue & Domes of Harmony medium prints illustrate the distance between the pieces when placed side-by-side.

4. Subtly express your interests & values
Wall art can communicate a lot about who you are & is one of the more personal elements of home decor. When choosing a piece of wall art, consider how it reflects your interests & values without overwhelming the space.
Subtly incorporate pieces that resonate with your passions. If you a wanderluster (like me!), you may want to choose photography prints that inspire an adventurous spirit, like this print of Casa da Santa Maria & its lighthouse. If you who prefer traditional artists such as Van Gogh and Matisse, you might opt for canvas paintings or original drawings or representations of their work instead. For those who are drawn to the more tactical and interactive elements of art, a sculptural abstract piece that sparks a sense of movement & balance may resonate more with you.
Allow it to become part of your personal narrative!

5. Mix photography with other forms of art
I personally love incorporating travel photography prints as medium to large print art as it evokes a sense of adventure, nostalgia and wanderlust. However, I'm also a strong believer that you should mix photography prints with other forms of art to create a dynamic & visually interesting space.
Photography prints offer a unique way to capture reality while other forms of art can bring in creative interpretation & emotion. This fusion allows you to express different facets of your personality while adding a layer of texture & depth to a room.
Experiment with contrasting styles to achieve a harmonious blend that enhances both the artwork itself and overall atmosphere of a room!

The best wall art doesn't just match your couch, it moves you. It reminds you of where you've been or where you dream of going. If you're a travel lover, thoughtful gift giver or someone who simply appreciates the beauty of the world, your walls should reflect that.
